the building

The new building with multipurpose hall named after Ivan Pavao II, is situated by the eastern wall of the monastery complex, at the position of the existing economic building for which this project suggested demolishion. By its volume and proportion the new building represents spatial dialogue with the monastery building, and creates a new
square of monastery complex. By its position, the hall with portico
defines the new pedestrian flows forming a public space of the
complex, and connects the square and existing path with the green area of „ Kalvarija“ . With this project we tried to define the new building through the spatial relation of classical architectural
elements of columned portico and the hall with the leaning roof, still keeping their contemplative character. We tried to do this keeping in mind the primary profane function of the building and the public space around it and avoiding the loss of the sacred character of the complex. Directed by this basics, the building is created by the simple and clear architectural language. The shape of the hall represents archetypal element of elongated prism with the leaning roof on four
sides. The portico is formed by the repetition of elegant laminas which, in their harmonical rhythm, open the space of the hall to the square and vice-versa. By using the classical materials such as simple brick for covering the roof and the walls of the hall and patinated concrete as a building material of portico and columns, the sacred and ceremonial character of the space is maintained.
