Communication technology’s ever increasing capacity to distort time, interval and distance, generated the essential challenge. How could the dinosaurian stadium model compete against the increasingly superior home video offering of remote comfort, convenience, capacity for ‘replay’, alternate viewing positions, and complementary information streams? What kind of architecture would liberate the spectator and democratise the venue?
Only a radical rethink of this building genre would sustain commitment to same time/same place spectator assembly...
Dallas Cowboys rose to the challenge by commissioning a ‘building apparatus’ that would emphatically restore the supreme spectator and audience imperative of being there, as ‘real time’ witnesses to triumphs and tragedy in sporting and concert events.
Four discrete objectives informed the design response:
- Enrich viewing experience by promoting electronic presentation as the primary communication medium.
- Enhance variety and freedom through bowl, concourse and external planning.
- Intensify engagement through transparency and permeability of external envelope and interior layering.
- Generate an ‘integrated’ architecture to fuse bowl and ‘wrap’ elements.
Extravaganzas of world largest superlatives define the outcome:
- Centre hung video boards - each 58 metres long by 26 - suspended 40 metres above the pitch
- Retractable end-walls 43 metres high by 66 wide
- Retractable roof - at 2.94 million m3 enclosing the world’s largest column free space
- Longest single span roof structure 471 metres in length
A simple, legible, architecture combines ‘brand identity’ with an assured backdrop - its graceful arched form offering majestic setting for titanic struggles within...
All in all, a demanding architectectural programme that has encouraged an innovative architectural solution.
