Henning Larsen Architects was commissioned by GB4 APS to construct their paradoxical vision of the modern golf club: an amalgamation of an authentic American golf course and meticulous Scandinavian carpentry. The outcome reconciles functional craft with unconventional formal aesthetics.
The Scandinavian Golf Club is a dynamic A-frame construction fabricated with rustic native materials. The non-traditional structural form includes staggering cantilevers and oblique angles which transform classical A-Frame dimensions into a modern hybrid. Simultaneously, the Scandinavian Golf Club efficiently functions as a commercial hub and golf resort. featuring numerous expansive fairways.
The Scandinavian Golf Club lies adjacent to an undulating 18-hole course. The architect of the course, Robert Trent Jones Jr., esteems a compatible integration of technical facility into the surrounding natural environment. The course lies within a 200-acre forested zone. Generous in-flow of daylight through clubhouse windows provides views of the surrounding forest. Danish military barracks and training grounds were transformed into a sustainable recreational landscape with special attention to energy efficiency.
Intensive efforts were directed toward meticulous craft, intensive interior detailing, and traditional Scandinavian finish carpentry. The clubhouse is constructed from four basic materials: Douglas-Fir, Norwegian slate, river rock and Tombak. The Douglas-Fir timber is sustainably harvested from southern Germany’s Black Forest and cut into T1 and T2 class. The largest lumber components are sawn into 15 m lengths, 20 cm x 50 cm. Norwegian kvartsskiffer (black slate) is imported from Otta, Norway. Slate plates and blocks are applied to walls, roofing, terraces and staircases. All slate pieces are sorted and selected in situ. Select steel components are utilized to support immense cantilevers where the extent exceeds the capacity of the Douglas-Fir.
The Scandinavian Golf Club won the annual award of the Copenhagen Carpenters’ Guild in 2009.
