Ruta del Peregrino

La Ruta del Peregrino, a pilgrimage route extending 117 kilometers in Jalisco, Mexico, is traveled every year by over two million people from different states of Mexico as an act of devotion, faith and purification. The pilgrims begin their journey in the town of Ameca to then walk through the mountain range of Jalisco toward their final destination in the town of Talpa de Allende to see the Rosario Virgin. This annual pilgrimage tour is mostly walked in mid-april, during holy week. The pilgrims that travel are from all ages and genders with a modest to low income.

Pilgrimages are a vital part of religion in Mexico, where this religious phenomenon of wholehearted faith and devotion has endured for centuries across the country, often unrecognized and unsupported by the local government, until recently.

In an effort to improve travel conditions and enhance the experience of this annual pilgrimage, Dellekamp Arquitectos, MXA| Tatiana Bilbao, and Rozana Montiel | Periferica invited an international team of prestigious architects to create stations at vital points throughout the route. These stations provide basic services such as shelter, look-out points and sanctuary, adding a sense of permanence to the route. This added infrastructure also creates a beneficial economic reliance on the local population.

Equally important were the symbolic intentions behind the assembly of stations. The works were conceived as symbolic architectural pieces that act together as part of an integral narrative that speaks to the heart of the pilgrimage. They create spaces of serenity, inspiration, introspection, allowing the emotional journey along its way.

The list of contributing architects reads: Ai Weiwei | Fake Design, Luis Aldrete, Christ & Gantenbein, Dellekamp Arquitectos, Elemental, Godoylab, HHF, Omar Orlaineta, Periferica, MXA | Tatiana Bilbao and Taller TOA. These architects were chosen, in addition to their proven ability and talent, for their sensibility to work with simple structures and simple materials, an attitude that complements the disposition of the pilgrimage route.

La Ruta del Peregrino is now under construction, with the financial support of the government of Jalisco as well as the national tourism agency. Once completed, it will provide shelter and a series of monuments and sanctuaries that symbolize the devotion and endurance of the pilgrims through pieces of architecture and art in the landscape along their journey.
